Want to avoid colds this winter? Get enough sleep!

Too little sleep affects everything from memory and performance to immune system function. Poor sleep has been linked to diabetes, depression, heart disease, stroke, hypertension, weight gain, and even premature death.

A study published in the journal Sleep examined the link between sleep and the incidence of the common cold. Using a technique called wrist actigraphy, which measures movement and inactivity during sleep, the study found that people who slept less than six hours a night the week before being exposed to a cold virus were 4.2 times more likely to catch a cold than people who got more than seven hours of sleep.

The study findings add to a growing body of evidence that sleep is as basic to good health as diet and exercise.
